Grooming: Coat Types & Maintenance Expectations

Pomskies have a double-coat, with a dense soft undercoat and a top coat of straight guard hairs. These coats protect the sensitive skin in both hot and cold weather, acting as an insulating layer.

Wooly Coated Pomsky: Although the wooly coated Pomsky requires more brushing, the coat is relatively low maintenance. Wooly coats have also been reported as shedding less than the other types.

Plush Coated Pomsky: This coat requires less maintenance but still has the thicker texture that many love. The plush coat generally is 1-2.5” and has the same density as a wooly coat but not the length. It can be a similar length as the standard coat but has a fluffier texture, longer hairs on the tail, longer on the ears, head and legs.

Standard Coated Pomsky: This coat is considerably less maintenance. Many breeders report that the standard coat sheds more in the individual hairs, rather than in the clumps of the other coat types. The coat length is less than 1”, kept fairly tight to the body and very dense.

Grooming requirements

Brushing is required at least once a week, but better twice a week. Pomskies have average to be expected shedding for a Husky x Pomeranian mix - which is a LOT but they will only blow their coat twice a year. Watch for mats in the softer fur behind the ears or at the armpits. When taking to the groomer, ask for the de-shed shampoo and blow out, sanitary trim and paw pad trim if needed. It is rare that they will need any additional trimming. We do recommend a visit to a professional groomer at least twice a year.

Recommended Grooming Products

Pin Brush: Make sure to brush your Pomsky coat every 2 to 3 days. This will help keep your Pomsky clean by removing any dirt and debris that get stuck to their fur. This will also remove any dead hairs and which will help your dog continue to smell fresh. Dead hairs that remain in the coat can be coated in with body oils, and if not removed will start to smell. A pin brush with polished tips will work well.

Rake Comb: This type of comb is an amazing de-matting tool! To relieve tangled knots from dense undercoats, this dog rake is the best option. The specially designed pins pull out the loose hair from the undercoat without hurting the dog. We do highly recommend you use this product during what is generally called “Shedding season”. It is also very good on matted fur: take your time with knots, they can be painful for your dogs to remove sometimes. Highly recommended on wooly Pomskies.

Slicker Dog Brush: With each passing stroke, the soft metal comb slicker brush collects loose pet hair. Simply press the button to have the retractable blade dispense the hair build-up right before your eyes! We do recommend the use of this product but only when your Pomsky is not shedding or after the Rake Comb has been used to make sue your Pomsky doesn’t have any tangled hair. Be gentle with this! We do recommend this product but the slicker brush does not (always – sometimes it does!) have polished tips. This means that using it too much or too vigorously can cause the damage of your dog’s hair follicles as it can scratch the skin. It is indicated on short/medium coat and not on wooly pomskies.

Keep eyes and ears clean with wipes and cleansers:

The Pomsky breed has pointy ears that put them at an advantage compared to other dogs with droopy ears but keeping them maintained is still crucial. Make sure to clean out your Pomskies ears at least once a week because excess wax can accumulate fast.

Using Eye wipes is an excellent way to wash your Pomskies face and get rid of any burgers attached to their fur. Baths alone are often not enough to reduce facial staining. Most stains on the face occur under the eyes and around the nose and mouth. In order to decrease facial staining, it is wise to wash your Pomskies face with a face wipe or cleanser.

What we do NOT Recommended:

Furminator de-shedding Tool: FUR-minator is a well-known brand that has a range of brushes all designed to help groom your furry friend BUT it is not ideal on double coated dogs like Pomskies. It is designed to work on the topcoat removing the dead fur by breaking the matted fur. Unfortunately, itt is made with blades that will basically CUT you pomsky undercoat. Damaging your Pomsky’s undercoat (guard hair) may cause them not to be able to self regulate their temperature.

NEVER EVER SHED YOUR POMSKY

Unless you have a medical reason to do it!
